With the mysterious and sudden migration of a significant portion of the population into the major cities over the last couple of years, the already sparse lands between cities have become desolate. Wizard towers, monasteries, villages, and even a few castles and towns have almost entirely emptied. And where people leave, outlaws and monsters move in. Nobody has even heard whispers from Frensland in ages, and there is no land route to Marcinia, but the roads to the border of Skrivia, Actyra, and Aldaland need to remain open for traffic from the cities, as well as the roads to any still functioning towns. There’s too much land for the Karakavian armies to handle, and things are getting out of hand. Mercenary groups have begun taking contracts to maintain the peace in the lands between towns and clear out the countryside of evildoers. These mercenaries have been hiring nearly anyone strong enough to wield a weapon in order to fulfill their contracts, and sending them out as peacekeepers.
Join a mercenary group, kill things, take their stuff, earn the respect of the citizenry, and get paid to do it. What more could an adventurer ask for?
